OHIP Information


Comprehensive eye health and vision exams in Ontario are covered by OHIP once every year for:

  • Patients up to 19 years of age
  • over 65 years of age

Most vision plans cover the cost of a comprehensive eye health and vision exam every two years.


Patients aged 20 to 64 years with the following, are still possibly insured by OHIP annually:

  • Glaucoma
  • Diabetes
  • Corneal Disease
  • Cataracts
  • Amblyopia (lazy eye)
  • Strabismus (crossed eye)
  • Retinopathy
  • Visual Field Defects

Common systemic conditions that may be detected on a regular eye examination are:

  • Diabetes
  • High Blood Pressure
  • High Cholesterol
  • Neurologic disease
  • Autoimmune disease including systemic lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and Sjogren's syndrome
